iPhone Camera Format: High Efficiency vs Most Compatible

Under Settings → Camera → Formats sit two options that iPhone users agonize over for years. High Efficiency saves half the space; Most Compatible shoots straight to JPG. This page helps you pick — and explains whether they can be mixed.

What the two options actually do

High Efficiency stores photos as HEIC using HEVC encoding — about half the size of JPG at equal quality. Most Compatible stores JPG directly, openable on any device.

High Efficiency costs nothing in quality: at equal file size it actually looks better. Its price is compatibility, never image quality.

Who each option suits

  • High Efficiency: storage is tight; your devices are mostly Apple (iPhone / Mac / iCloud).
  • Most Compatible: you frequently hand photos straight to Windows PCs, print shops or older devices and want no conversion step.

Does switching change old photos?

No. The setting affects only photos taken after the change; existing photos keep their format. To unify formats, convert at export time — originals stay untouched.

The middle ground

Stay on High Efficiency and convert on transfer: cable import, AirDrop, or a quick batch conversion with this site's tool before sending. You keep the storage savings without ever hitting a 'can't open this file' wall.
